Are You Travel Ready? REAL ID Enforcement Begins Wednesday, May 7, 2025

If you’re planning to fly within the United States for summer vacations, business, or any other reason, it’s time to make sure you’re REAL ID compliant. Beginning May 7, 2025, adults (18 and older) will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights. You will also need it to enter certain federal facilities.

What is REAL ID?

REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets federal security standards to enhance national security.

How do I know if I have REAL ID? Look for the Star!

It’s easy to tell if your identification is REAL ID compliant. Compliant IDs usually have a star in the upper right-hand corner. You can also visit the Department of Homeland Security and step through their process. It only takes a minute.

What about the Children?

According to the Transportation Security Administration, children under 18 do not need a REAL ID to fly domestically with an adult.

Acceptable Alternatives:
If you don’t have a REAL ID, you can use a valid U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, or a Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler card (like Global Entry) at TSA checkpoints.

How to Get a REAL ID:
To obtain a REAL ID, visit your local DMV in person with documents verifying your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, two proofs of residency, and lawful status in the U.S. Some states offer online pre-application, but most require an in-person visit.

What Happens If You Don’t Have One?
Travelers without a REAL ID or another acceptable ID may face additional screening, delays, or even be denied entry at airport security checkpoints.

A prepared traveler is a happy traveler. Check your driver’s license, look for the star, and you’ll feel more prepared for your next adventure!

Happy Travels!
